Um, good thing, with caveat.

Caveat being, if this method is widely adopted, you may find your news sources very narrow in scope. Interesting doesn't always equal important, popular doesn't always mean newsworthy. I don't work in media, but I use (I didn't say "trust") the media to keep me broadly informed. Narrower topics I research myself. But that's just me.

Otherwise, this could be very cool. I'm getting flashes of Idoru, with fully-funded investigations of pop stars launched by fanboys/girls.

Fundamentally, I see this as possibly the solution for the broke, starving writer. Bypass the middleman, which is what the web is entirely about. If you trust a source and want to read what they write, you press that sweaty digital currency into their hungry virtual palms and put them to work. No publisher, no distributer, no marketer. Advertising will be almost completely viral. No page rates. The market will support what it will support, and will pay for what it wants. Figure out what that is, and you can become a very wealthy content provider.
